Hardening a Linux Server: A Practical Checklist
A repeatable starting checklist for reducing exposure, improving observability, and making recovery possible.
Start with inventory and purpose. Remove unused services, restrict listening ports, create named administrative accounts, and disable direct root login where the operating model allows it.
Then secure access, patching, firewall rules, logging, time synchronization, backups, and alerting. Each control should have an owner and a way to verify that it still works.
Hardening is an operating process rather than a one-time command list. Review changes after deployments and test restoration from backup before an incident makes the test urgent.
