Self-hosting Services with Docker, Nginx, and Let’s Encrypt
How a reverse proxy, container boundaries, and automatic certificates create a cleaner self-hosted service layout.
A self-hosted service becomes easier to operate when the application, reverse proxy, and certificate renewal responsibilities are separated.
Docker Compose provides a repeatable definition for the services, while Nginx handles host-based routing and the public edge. Only the proxy needs to accept inbound web traffic; application containers can remain on an internal network.
Certificate automation should be observable and tested. Track renewal logs, keep persistent data outside disposable containers, and document the recovery path before calling the deployment complete.
